What's Going On?

Lanier Quality Deer Management (QDMA) and Southern Heritage Land Company

2/18/2010
The Lanier QDMA Branch/Southern Heritage Land Company Hunters for the Hungry (HFH) program in Gainesville, GA gave out the last of our 2009 frozen ground venison in mid-January. Our freezer is empty! Our grand total of venison for 2009 was 2,482 lbs (down only 3% from the 2,561 lbs in 2008) for $2,548 spent ($2,714 in 2008). There were 12 charities receiving the high quality meat. These charities included Good News at Noon, Gainesville Baptist Rescue Mission, Chattahoochee Baptist Mission, No One’s Alone women’s shelter, My Sister’s Place, More Than Enough, Triumphant of Jesus Christ, Set Free Ministries, Serenity House, RAD Ministries, His Harvest House (Free Chapel) and John Paul II Center. Hicks Deer Processing in Oglethorpe County, GA saved us in the end as we bought 1,159 lbs @ one dollar/lb. from them in early January.
Due to record rainfall, the poor economy and in some cases lower deer populations, the deer harvest as well as the number of deer brought to processors was down in 2009. I'm also sure that the passing of our main processor and great friend Patrick Hroma hurt also as we were forced to shift to Souther's Deer Cooler in Murrayville and it was difficult getting the word out to potential donors.
All in all, this was not a bad year! The $2,000 placed in this HFH account by the Lanier Branch in September 2009 went to a very worthy cause especially in light of very tough economic conditions.
Lanier QDMA started our local program in fall 2006 but actually made our first donation of frozen ground venison in December 2005, delivering 500 lbs of venison purchased from Hicks Deer Cooler in Crawford to Good News at Noon. Last years 2008 banquet proceeds and another donation from SHLC paid for processing of 64 deer totaling 2,561 pounds of ground venison which was donated to 12 worthy local charities, producing a five year grand total of 10,294 lbs. Ladies and gentlemen, that is well over 5 tons of high protein, low fat venison! We want to thank all of our local hunters for their generous donations over our entire five year period. If they are able to keep up the good work, we will too!
