What's Going On?Lanier QDMA Branch 2007-08 Hunters for the Hungry Program in Gainesville, Georgia3/7/2008We can’t think of anything that fits together better than a QDMA branch and a local Hunters for the Hungry (HFH) program. This kills two birds with one stone by fulfilling the need to harvest does combined with a fine charitable way of utilizing the extra high quality venison that can come from controlling your deer population. We started HFH in fall 2006 and it worked out so well that we did it again in 2007. It has not been difficult, thanks to our corporate sponsors Southern Heritage Land Co. (SHLC). When we announced our plans at our September 2006 banquet, Charlie Lathem and Stan Bennett of SHLC approached us shortly afterward and said they wanted to partner in the program. They wrote us a big check to kick off the program then they bought a brand new chest freezer to help temporarily store meat. We established a separate checking account for QDMA Lanier HFH and added money from our banquet revenues to the SHLC donation. Meanwhile, we worked out a second year contract with Patrick Hroma (PK’s cooler) to process ground venison in one pound packs at $45 per deer and quartered deer in a cooler at $25 each. He even agreed to do individual hindquarters and post notices for hunters picking up processed deer to donate individual packs of frozen venison. We posted announcements in local sporting goods stores and put notices in the local newspaper announcing the second year of our HFH program with the ground rules and a map to Patrick’s cooler. Although the donation dates for our second year was November 17-25 (Thanksgiving week including two weekends), we offered a deal for QDMA members to trickle in single HFH deer all season (September 8-January 1) before and after the official dates. Our concern was swamping the cooler with too many deer to process. Everything worked out fine. We also purchased 770 lbs of ground frozen venison after the season ended from Hicks Deer Processing in Crawford, GA. Our final totals for the 2007 season included processing and distributing 2,940 lbs of ground frozen venison from 74 deer averaging 40 lbs/deer. Our cost was $3,165 or $1.08/lb meat, a real bargain. This equates to about 14,700 meals for needy men, women and kids in our local community! These totals blew away our 2006 numbers with a 37% increase in one year! Our charities included Good News at Noon (soup kitchen for poor folks) and 13 other programs including 3-Dimentional Life Boys Home and No One Alone battered women’s shelter. Our officers and committee are already excited about next fall’s HFH program getting even bigger and better. Lanier GA Branch HFH program.
