Smith graduated from in 1970 with a BSFR. And now Mike is bringing his experience to the Southern Heritage Land Company Team. After graduating from UGA Mike worked two years as a Forester for the state of Georgia as a he advised landowners on management of forest lands. Then in 1972 he began work as a Land Surveyor. As a Land Surveyor Mike performs boundary surveys to tell people where their property is, map the topography of land for engineering design, establish elevations of home sites for flood insurance, perform title surveys for real estate transactions, certify that structures are built according to design, lay out buildings, subdivisions and other construction projects so the construction companies can relate the engineering plans to the real world, and build control networks that all land parcels can relate to in a given area. He also maps slopes and areas for pay volumes or quantities, maps river bottoms for dredging, lays out photo control for aerial photography , writes legal descriptions that are used to describe pieces of property, maps corridors for tunnels, roads, airports, pipelines, cellular networks and railroads, and splits up properties into new lots, such as subdivisions. In 1975-1980 Mike worked as Stephens County Tax Assessor as Real Estete Appraiser. Appraisers and assessors of real estate estimate the value of real property for a variety of purposes, such as to assess property tax, to determine a sales price, or to determine the amount of a mortgage that might be granted on a property. They may be called on to determine the value of any type of real estate, ranging from farmland to a major shopping center, although they often specialize in appraising or assessing only a certain type of real estate such as residential buildings or commercial properties. Assessors determine the value of all properties in a locality for property tax purposes whereas appraisers appraise properties one at a time for a variety of purposes, such as to determine what a good sale price would be for a home or to settle an estate or aid in a divorce settlement. 1980-1987 Mike worked on and improved his Land Surveying skills with several surveying companies. Also during that time he received his license as a Registered Forester, Certified Real Estate Appraiser and a Register Land Surveyor in Georgia and South Carolina. Since 1987 Mike has owned and operated his own land surveying company licensed in Georgia and South Carolina. Back to Staff |
